Texel's Link to the Middle Corridor.

In the dynamic world of 2023, our Innovation Media magazine has launched an exciting venture "The New Silk Road Book". This innovative project serves as a networking platform facilitating direct communication on investment projects, new technologies, and long-term planning between Western European countries and the New Silk Road. Central to our study is the Middle Corridor, a region rich in history and cultural significance along the New Silk Road.

Our platform offers a unique perspective on the contemporary development of cities, regions, and countries along the Middle Corridor, smoothly combining Western technologies with the needs of emerging markets along the Silk Road. To achieve this goal, we delved into the historical roots and cultural heritage of the Middle Corridor countries such as Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, and Kazakhstan.

Even during the Christmas holidays, our curiosity led us to the Dutch Nordic island of Texel, historically associated with Georgia (The Georgian Rebellion on Texel). Every connection between the Netherlands and the Silk Road regions mattered to us.

Our goal was to comprehensively understand and imagine how these intersections lay the foundation of modern cooperation, contributing to the sustainable development of the world.

Texel, with its VOC heritage museum Kaap Skil, is a fascinating combination of history and modernity. We traced the maritime prosperity of the Dutch Golden Age, when majestic seagoing ships lay in the anchorage for ships on the southeast corner of Texel.  The careful planning of the departures and arrivals of the Dutch East India Company, facilitated by the exceptional organization of the VOC, became apparent. Interestingly, we discovered innovative technologies such as portable gardens on VOC ships, demonstrating the Netherlands' commitment to improving the quality of life for the sea crew.

The connection with Texel deepened with the discovery of artifacts from the Palmwood shipwreck, including a beautifully preserved silk dress. Called the Textile Night Watch, this underwater discovery became a symbol of 17th-century luxury. Standing in front of it transported me to the docks of Texel centuries ago, highlighting the human stories woven into history. This silk dress is paired with another from the Tbilisi Silk Museum, connecting two corners of the Silk Road.

As we unraveled these historical threads, parallel narratives emerged between the Netherlands and the Middle Silk Road corridor. The Dutch, in their golden age, created Western trade networks along the Silk Road, while the Middle Corridor became the infrastructure bridge of the Silk Road. Our encounter with Texel highlighted an unexpected connection that reveals the enduring influence of the Silk Road beyond traditional routes.

Today, the Netherlands can play a key role in the modern revival of the Silk Road, serving as a critical link to infrastructure, technological excellence, and economic growth. The Middle Corridor becomes a vital artery of the Silk Road, facilitating unhindered trade and cultural exchange.

The Silk Road is not just a route; it is a catalyst for innovation and cultural fusion. Texel and the Middle Corridor, although geographically distant, have a deep connection that strengthens the heritage of the Silk Road. As we journey through the complex threads of history and witness strategic cooperation between countries, let us appreciate the rich interweaving of cultures. This looks forward to the dynamic contribution of the growing logistics industry stretching from the Middle Corridor to Western Europe. With echoes of the past and the pulse of the present, let us embark on an extraordinary journey that intertwines the legacy of the Silk Road with the desire for a connected and dynamic future.

Stay tuned for our upcoming story on the Tbilisi Silk Museum, which features a Silk Road silk dress from Georgia.
